Font Box is a powerful program. Please take a moment to read this and save yourself grief.
Precautions
Start without Extensions - select 'Restart' from the 'Special' menu and hold down the shift key until you see the message 'Extensions Disabled'. In addition to interfering with normal Mac OS functions, some Extensions open fonts which may prevent Font Box from closing them.
Check the Directory Structure - run Disk First Aid (included with your System software) or Norton Disk Doctor and repair any directory structure damage. The directory structure is a map of the files on your drive. Since Font Box reads literally thousands of files, it is important that the map is accurate. We suggest you do this with the Extensions disabled.
Trouble-shooting
Increase Font Box's Memory - select the Font Box icon in the Finder, select 'Get Info' from the 'File' menu, and enter a number in the Preferred Size box. You should increase the memory if you encounter any problems.
Analyzing Old Fonts
Default setting - this window opens with four tests checked on. You should not turn any of these tests off, although you may add any options.
Creating New Fonts
Please read the manual - you can arrange your fonts in endless organizations. We highly recommend that you read at least this part of the manual to understand the settings. We recommend that you select 'Move System fonts to the Fonts folder' if the option is available. This makes sure that the core System fonts are available.
After Running Font Box
Font Utilites - if you use Adobe Type Reunion, Now WYSIWYG Menus, or a similar product, you should delete its preference file from the Preferences folder located in the System folder, and restart the computer. The Extension will build a new preference file.
Font Managers - if you use Suitcase, ATM Deluxe, Master Juggler, or a similar product, you should use it to open the new suitcases created by Font Box.
ATM/Acrobat Reader - if you get a message stating that 'The substitution fonts for Super ATM or Acrobat Reader are not installed...', please make sure these fonts are in your Fonts folder in the System folder: Adobe Sans MM, Adobe Serif MM AdobeSanMM, and AdobeSerMM.
Used as directed, Font Box removes the misery of managing fonts. We hope you enjoy the program.
About the Editions
Font Box is available in three Editions:
Network Edition - $159.95 - if life would be better if everyone on the network, or certain groups, all had the same fonts, then this will amaze you. It reads all the fonts on the Macs you choose, creates the best set of everything it finds, and writes this best set to each Mac or a server. It synchronizes all the fonts in a work group.
Standard Edition - $69.95 - if Font Box reports over 250 Bitmapped fonts and you don't need the Network Edition's functions, then get this. It's our most popular size.
Personal Edition - $29.95 - limited to analyzing up to 250 typefaces at a time. When the demo finishes, a window displays the total number of problems, the number of Bitmapped fonts, and the number of Postscript fonts found. If the number of Bitmapped fonts is less than 250, then the Personal Edition is for you.
